AI Question Generation

The Questions page can draft an interview from your study details.

September 26, 2026

Status: currently broken. In production, Generate Questions fails with an internal error (name 'prompt_parts' is not defined) and the page keeps spinning without showing a message. Write questions by hand on the Questions page, or create them with the MCP create_question tool, until this is fixed.

Where it is

Questions page → Generate with AI on an empty study, or Generate Additional Questions with AI once questions exist.

What it reads

  • Research question, objectives, methodology and target population from the study details
  • Any research guide you uploaded
  • Your Additional Instructions
  • The questions already in the study, when extending a list

Options

  • Number of Questions — 3 to 20
  • Additional Instructions — free text: topics to cover, tone, terminology to use or avoid, types you want ("include one 1-5 scale question about price")

Generated questions land in the editor for review. Nothing is final until you save.

Getting better output

  1. Fill in study details first. This is the single biggest factor.
  2. Name the types you want in the instructions, otherwise you mostly get open text.
  3. Say what to avoid — jargon, leading phrasing, sensitive areas.
  4. Generate fewer, then extend. Eight good questions beat twenty shallow ones.
  5. Always review. Treat output as a draft: check order, remove duplicates, tighten wording, then run Validate.

Alternatives

  • Import a research guide — Questions → Import Questions, which extracts questions from a document you already have.
  • Write via API — create_question per question, then validate_questions. See MCP Server & API.
